Old Coast Guard Road
At the end of Old Coast Guard Road just a couple miles south of our dive shop in Hawi, is an excellent dive spot.
Even when the trade winds are blowing hard, the bay is usually quite nice. The entry and exit is a short walk over
the lava rock.
There is a small keyhole in the rocks that you can use to make your exit.
Be careful walking over the sharp lava rock and check that the surge isn't to bad before you get in.
During a swell, the waves and surge can make this place a difficult entry/exit.
There is a lot to see in relatively shallow water between 15 and 20'. The bottom contour
is gently sloping with many ledges, rock outcroppings, holes and small caves to explore. The currents can get strong on the outside but usually not bad close to shore.
If you follow the shoreline to the right you'll get to about 40' deep. You can head straight out and
get significantly deeper about 70 to 80 feet but you'll really
start to notice the current out here. You'll find lots of fish, eels, a few lobsters the occasional shark and more. Don't step on that devil scorpion, he may look
like a rock but his sting will tell you differently.
